Infrared Sauna:
The Complete Guide

The difference between far, near, and full spectrum infrared, exactly how long to sit in one, and honest reviews of the blankets and cabins worth your money.

Far, near, and full spectrum — explained simply

Infrared saunas don't heat the air around you like a traditional sauna — they use infrared light to warm your body directly, so cabins run cooler (120–140°F) while you sweat just as much. Not all infrared is the same, though, and the wavelength determines what you actually get.

Far infrared (FIR) has the longest wavelength and penetrates deepest into tissue, which is why it's associated with detoxification and the most comfortable heat. Near infrared (NIR) has a shorter wavelength, penetrates the skin more superficially, and is closer to the light used in red light therapy panels — often linked to skin and surface-level cellular benefits. Full spectrum combines far, mid, and near infrared in one unit, giving you the broadest range of benefits but usually at a higher price point.

For most people starting out, far infrared alone is enough to get the core cardiovascular and relaxation benefits. Full spectrum is worth the upgrade if you also want the skin and surface benefits associated with near infrared.
